About this tour

Khasab Mountain Safari — Conquer the Hajar Mountains & Discover Musandam from Above

While Khasab is world-famous for its spectacular fjord coastline, the Musandam Peninsula holds an equally extraordinary secret above the waterline: a rugged, towering mountain landscape that very few travellers ever truly explore. The Khasab Mountain Safari changes that — taking you off-road into the dramatic Hajar Mountains aboard a powerful 4×4 vehicle, all the way to the summit of Jebel Al Harim, the highest peak in Musandam at 2,087 metres above sea level.

This is not your typical sightseeing tour. The Khasab Mountain Safari is a raw, exhilarating adventure through ancient terrain — winding up narrow mountain passes with sheer drops on either side, stopping at million-year-old fossil sites, visiting the traditional Bedouin village of Sayh perched at 1,100 metres, and gazing out over the Indian Ocean from the breathtaking viewpoint of Khor Najd. For travellers who want to see the real Musandam — far from any crowd — this is the tour that delivers it.

What Is the Khasab Mountain Safari?

The Khasab Mountain Safari is a guided off-road 4×4 tour that takes you deep into the Hajar Mountain range of the Musandam Peninsula — one of the most dramatic and least explored mountain landscapes in the entire Arabian Gulf region. Travelling in a comfortable, air-conditioned 4-wheel drive vehicle with an experienced local driver-guide, you ascend rugged mountain tracks that ordinary vehicles simply cannot navigate, reaching viewpoints, heritage sites, and ancient villages that remain virtually untouched by modern tourism.

The tour covers approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and includes multiple stops of genuine interest: from the ancient fossil fields near Jebel Al Harim — where you can see the preserved remains of marine creatures from millions of years ago embedded in the limestone — to the serene Bedouin plateau village of Sayh, where life continues much as it has for generations. The journey culminates at Khor Najd, the only accessible point in Musandam where the mountain terrain meets the sea, offering one of the most photographed viewpoints in all of Oman.

Unlike the dhow cruise experience on the water, the mountain safari gives you Musandam from an entirely different perspective — looking down at the fjords, the sea, and the distant coastline from above. It is a complement to the water tours rather than a replacement, and many guests combine a morning mountain safari with an afternoon dhow cruise for the complete Musandam experience.

Khasab Mountain Safari — Step-by-Step Itinerary

Two sessions are available daily. Both follow the same route and stops:

09:00 AM / 01:00 PM Pickup from Your Hotel in Khasab — Your driver-guide collects you from any hotel, resort, or guesthouse within Khasab. For cruise ship passengers, pickup is available directly from Khasab Port.
09:15 AM / 01:15 PM Khasab Town & Castle Overview — A brief orientation as your driver introduces the Musandam Peninsula, its history, and the route ahead. Passing views of 17th-century Khasab Castle as you leave town.
09:30 AM / 01:30 PM Off-Road Mountain Ascent Begins — The 4×4 leaves the tarmac and begins its climb into the Hajar Mountains. The terrain becomes immediately dramatic — steep rocky tracks, sharp switchbacks, and extraordinary views of the valleys and coastline below.
10:00 AM / 02:00 PM Fossil Site Near Jebel Al Harim — Stop at a remarkable geological site close to the summit of Jebel Al Harim, where the limestone rocks are embedded with fossils of ancient marine creatures — fish, clams, sea urchins, and trilobites — dating back millions of years. A vivid reminder that these mountains were once the bed of an ancient ocean.
10:30 AM / 02:30 PM Jebel Al Harim Summit (2,087m) — Reach the peak of the highest mountain in Musandam. At 2,087 metres above sea level, the panoramic views from the summit are extraordinary — the entire Hajar Mountain range, the Strait of Hormuz, the Indian Ocean, and, on clear days, the mountains of Iran across the water. Wildlife sightings including mountain goats and eagles are common at this altitude.
11:00 AM / 03:00 PM Sayh Bedouin Village (1,100m) — Descend slightly to visit Sayh, a peaceful traditional Bedouin village at 1,100 metres above sea level. Nestled on a mountain plateau surrounded by terraced date palms and stone houses, Sayh offers a rare and authentic glimpse into the traditional highland lifestyle of Musandam’s indigenous community. Soft drinks and refreshments served here.
11:30 AM / 03:30 PM Khor Najd Viewpoint & Lagoon — The safari’s dramatic finale: the stunning Khor Najd overlook, where the rugged mountain landscape meets the turquoise sea in a breathtaking natural amphitheatre. Khor Najd is Musandam’s most photographed viewpoint — a secluded, sea-locked lagoon surrounded by towering cliffs, accessible only from above by road or from below by boat. Multiple photo stops here.
12:30 PM / 04:30 PM Return to Khasab — Your driver brings you back to your hotel, guesthouse, or the port, completing the adventure. The afternoon slot returns guests by approximately 4:30–5:00 PM.

The Landmarks That Make the Mountain Safari Unmissable

Jebel Al Harim — The Mountain of Women (2,087m)

Jebel Al Harim — whose name translates as ‘Mountain of Women’ in Arabic — is the highest point in the entire Musandam Peninsula, rising to 2,087 metres (6,847 feet) above sea level. Historically, the mountain’s name is thought to derive from its role as a refuge for the women and children of local tribes during times of conflict, given its near-inaccessible terrain. Today, it is a natural wonder of rare beauty. The summit rewards those who reach it with a 360-degree panorama that takes in the entire Hajar Mountain chain, the shimmering Strait of Hormuz, and — on exceptionally clear days — the coastline of Iran across the water.

The Fossil Fields — A Window into Deep Time

One of the most extraordinary stops on the Khasab Mountain Safari is the fossil site near the summit of Jebel Al Harim. Embedded in the ancient limestone rocks — rocks that were once part of the floor of an ancient ocean — are perfectly preserved fossils of marine creatures that lived millions of years ago. Fish bones, sea urchins, clam shells, and trilobites are clearly visible within the rock surface. Your guide will point out the most impressive specimens and explain how these mountains rose from beneath the sea over millions of years of geological activity. It is a genuinely humbling and fascinating encounter with deep time.

Sayh — A Living Bedouin Village at 1,100 Metres

Perched at 1,100 metres above sea level on a broad mountain plateau, Sayh is one of the few traditional Bedouin communities in the Musandam highlands that remains inhabited and maintains its original way of life. Stone houses built into the hillside, terraced date palm gardens, roaming goats, and the quiet rhythms of a self-sufficient mountain community — Sayh offers a rare and authentic window into a way of life that has changed little over centuries. Visiting this village is a highlight for travellers who want genuine cultural connection alongside physical adventure.

Khor Najd — Where the Mountain Meets the Sea

Khor Najd is arguably the single most dramatic viewpoint in all of Musandam. Standing at the overlook above Khor Najd, you are gazing down at one of the most pristine and secluded lagoons on the Arabian Peninsula — a turquoise body of sea water enclosed on three sides by sheer limestone cliffs rising hundreds of metres from the water. The contrast between the golden-brown rock and the impossibly blue water below is visually breathtaking. There is no road access to Khor Najd from the water — this viewpoint is accessible only from above, making it a privilege unique to the mountain safari experience.

Who Is the Khasab Mountain Safari Perfect For?

The mountain safari is a versatile tour that delivers a genuinely different kind of adventure from Khasab’s water-based experiences. It is ideal for:

  •     Adventure Seekers & Off-Road Enthusiasts — The 4×4 ascent through narrow, rocky mountain tracks with vertiginous drops is a genuine off-road adventure. If the idea of threading through mountain passes that challenges even experienced 4×4 drivers sounds thrilling, this tour is for you.
  •     Photography & Landscape Lovers — The views from Jebel Al Harim and Khor Najd are among the most spectacular in the Arabian Peninsula. The combination of ancient geology, dramatic topography, and remote human settlements provides extraordinary photographic opportunities at every stop.
  •     Culture & History Enthusiasts — The fossil fields, the Bedouin village of Sayh, and the ancient rock carvings along the mountain route offer a rich encounter with both natural and human history spanning millions of years. Every stop reveals a new layer of Musandam’s extraordinary heritage.
  •     Cruise Ship Passengers — For guests with just a few hours ashore in Khasab, the mountain safari is the ideal land-based excursion. At 3.5–4 hours, it fits within a typical port stop and delivers an extraordinary, genuinely unique shore experience.
  •     Travellers Seeking the Complete Musandam Experience — The mountain safari complements the dhow cruise perfectly. Many guests combine a morning safari with an afternoon cruise — or vice versa — to experience both the highlands and the fjords in a single day, covering everything Khasab has to offer.
  •     Families & Couples — The tour is accessible to a wide range of ages and fitness levels, as all movement is by vehicle. No hiking or strenuous activity is required to reach any of the key viewpoints. Simply sit back, hold on through the off-road sections, and enjoy the ride.

The Hajar Mountains of Musandam — Ancient Geology, Living Culture

The Hajar Mountains — of which Jebel Al Harim is the highest northern peak — are among the oldest and most geologically complex mountain ranges in the Arabian Peninsula. Formed through tectonic processes that began over 90 million years ago, the Hajar range stretches from the Musandam Peninsula in the north of Oman all the way south through the UAE’s Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, and into mainland Oman. In Musandam, the mountains are at their most dramatic: steep, angular limestone ridges that drop almost vertically into the sea, creating the fjords that define the region’s coastal character.

The limestone composition of the Hajar Mountains has preserved an extraordinary geological record. The rocks in the higher elevations of Musandam were once the floor of an ancient ocean, and the fossils visible near Jebel Al Harim are living evidence of a time when this terrain lay beneath water. Over millions of years, tectonic pressure forced these ocean-floor rocks upward, creating the mountain range that now towers over the Strait of Hormuz.

At a human scale, the Hajar Mountains of Musandam have provided shelter, livelihood, and identity to the indigenous communities of the peninsula for thousands of years. The terraced stone villages, ancient aflaj water channels, and mountain track networks are a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of a people who have made their home in one of the world’s most challenging and magnificent landscapes. The Khasab Mountain Safari brings you into direct contact with this landscape — not just as a spectator, but as a participant.
